It's older than printing itself, almost
Lorem Ipsum isn't randomly generated gibberish — it's scrambled Latin, and the source has actually been traced: it comes from a passage in Cicero's philosophical text "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum," written around 45 BC. A 16th-century typesetter is believed to have scrambled a passage from it to create sample text for a type specimen book, and the practice of using that garbled Latin as filler text stuck for the next 500 years, all the way into modern web design.
What "lorem ipsum" itself means
The opening words are actually a fragment cut mid-word from the original Latin: "dolorem ipsum" (meaning roughly "pain itself") got split in the scrambling process, leaving the nonsensical "lorem ipsum" that everyone now recognizes, even though it isn't a real Latin phrase on its own.
Why not just use real English text?
This is the part that actually matters for anyone reviewing a design today: using real, readable words in a mockup is a distraction. A client or stakeholder looking at a homepage draft with real sentences will start reading and editing the words instead of judging the layout, spacing, and visual hierarchy — which is usually what the mockup review is actually for at that stage. Nonsense Latin text lets the eye register "this is a paragraph of roughly this length and shape" without the brain trying to comprehend it, a practice designers sometimes call "greeking" text.
When Lorem Ipsum is the wrong choice
For accessibility testing, final content review, or anything involving real user testing, placeholder Latin defeats the purpose — you need real, representative content to know how an actual paragraph of your actual language will wrap, translate, or read. Lorem Ipsum is a layout tool, not a content tool; swap it out before anything goes near a real audience.
