The calculation accounts for the actual number of days in each month and for leap years, so the years/months/days figure matches how people naturally describe age rather than relying on a rough 365-day average. This is useful for filling out forms that ask for exact age, checking eligibility rules with a minimum age requirement, planning an anniversary or birthday countdown, or simply satisfying curiosity about how many days you've been alive. The "as of" date option also makes it possible to calculate someone's age at a specific historical event or a future milestone date, not just today.
